Mt. Pulaski 175th Anniversary Celebration

Old Settlers Tour: Steenbergen Cemetary

Scattered across the prairie surrounding our city are a number of small cemeteries where many of our early settlers and their families are buried. Many are still in use today including Steenbergen Cemetery, 3.5 miles south of Mt. Pulaski.

As the largest of our local country cemeteries, Steenbergen is supported by a trust established by Ira Veail in 1953. Generations of families have found their final resting place along with veterans from the Revolutionary War up to our most recent conflicts.

Looking out across the fields one can see where many of these early families settled and forged a new life on yet the unbroken prairie. Come hear the stories of those who came and settled this land long before Illinois became a state.

Times of tours and lectures will be posted on the website and in newspapers at a later date along with information about reservations. See you in July.
